Oberammergau and Linderhof!

Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013

This morning, we ladies are traveling to a beautiful town in the Alps, Oberammergau!  We are taking Grandma to see some castles down there.

The drive is only about 1.5 hours.  Lea had the camera for a bit:
Silly girl.  These 3 napped while I drove.

We went to Schloss Linderhof first.  This is a castle that once belonged to King Ludwig II of Bavaria.  This was the only castle of his that was finished and he lived here for 7 or 8 years.  It was in 1860/1870 something.  (Dates are getting fuzzy.)  The amazing thing is, over here, this is not even old!!

It was very snowy and slippery.  We 3 younger women fell down!  Thank God Grandma didn't.  The snow is annoying and cold, but WOW the beauty it adds!!!
Yes, we had to walk up these and they weren't even cleared.  Germany....where is your salt???
We stopped at the gift shop and Lainie found an adorable hat.
Garden gnome?  We didn't buy this one.
Scenes on the path to the palace:

Those German dogs are SO well behaved!  No leashes.  Still stay by their people!

Why bring your dog to a castle?  I don't know.  But they were cute.

Notice Lainie's hot chocolate.  In a few minutes, she fell AGAIN and spilled it down her own back!  How?  I don't know.

The gardens here at Linderhof are so beautiful in season.  This arbor walk is covered with green vines!  But still quite lovely in the snow, don't you think?

An American serviceman from Cali stationed here took this one

Photographs are not allowed inside the castle.  I only got one in the lobby!!
It is so fancy and ornate and fabulous in there!  King Ludwig was a master at spending Bavaria's money.

You can see some good pics on the link above!

A little bit of snow here in the Alps!!

Lea has a hot chocolate mustache
The palace is really amazing and we had a great time!  We drove on to Oberammergau, the town we are staying in tonight.  We stopped at a restaurant and had some lunch.
Soup for Lainie

Salad for Lainie...typical German salad.  Salad on top of pickled veggies: shredded carrots and cabbage.

Grandma had the traditional Schweinebraten (roast pork) with Knoedel (dumpling)  She didn't love it.

Lea had Wienerschnitzel and fries, not sure why they are on separate plates???
3 plates for me.  Why?  I don't know this either.  Delicious chicken with noodles and veggies with gravy.
We checked into the hotel and got settled in.  It is a very cool room with a loft! The girls hijacked the loft.
There was a bed up there and a full bath!

Grandma and I got the pull out couch.  It was actually very comfy!  Notice the window and blinds behind the couch/bed.  They will be mentioned later.

Our view...hard to see, but there is an ALP out there!!!
The downstairs bathroom included a nice shower.  I took this pic from inside the shower.  The camera is on  the toilet.  Yes, the toilet is IN THE SHOWER.

Downstairs bathtub.  See that blind?  The same blind from over the couch?  Yeah, well, it is controlled from outside the bathroom, in the living room.  And the window has a great view into that shower/toilet room with the glass door.  This would not be a problem if I was going potty without a teenage girl around who thought it was funny to lift the blinds.  Har de har har.

Upstairs

We walked around and went in the charming little shops.  Oberammergau is known for it's Passion Play and for it's woodcarvings.  The play is only every 10 years I think, but the woodcarvings are always there!
Our hotel, the Alte Post

Woodcarving shop...beautifully painted!

Hotel from farther back.  Hi Lea!
My babies in the Alps

Lederhosen anyone?

Wow, what a deal!

A tiny part of one of the woodcarving shops.  Nativity scenes are very popular.

I love that mountain peak!  There is a cross up there, see it?
How about now?  Stunning view.

Imagine in the summer....
The view from our room when it cleared up a bit, not great, but hey, it's mountains!
We rested up a bit and then went downstairs to our hotel's restaurant for dinner.
I had potato bacon soup.  Delish!!!!

Lainie's creamy tomato soup

Wienerschnitzel

So we decided to eat dessert.  They had this fabulous ice cream creation menu.  Lea wanted a bee.  Here is the menu picture:

And here is what she got:
An exact match!!!
Lainie wanted a mouse.  Menu:
What she got:
NAILED IT!!!
This will be a topic of conversation and laughter for years to come!  You have to laugh at this abomination!!!

We read books and relaxed in our cool room.

What a great day!  It was great to get away, just us girls.  We really had fun and made such great memories!!  Tomorrow will be another good day :)
